Bank strike from Monday; Branch services to hit, banks release advisory

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Bank customers may face disruption in branch-based services this week as bank employees' unions have called a nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30.
With the three-day strike coinciding with other scheduled bank holidays in some regions, customers who need to visit branches are advised to complete important transactions in advance.
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called the three-day nationwide strike, which could affect the functioning of bank branches across the country. The impact, however, may vary between banks and locations depending on employee participation and local holiday schedules.
Customers should also note that bank holidays are not uniform across India. The Reserve Bank of India maintains state-wise holiday calendars, meaning a branch may remain closed on a day when banks in another state are operating normally.
Importantly, a physical branch closure does not mean that all banking services will come to a halt. Customers can continue to use digital banking channels such as internet banking, mobile banking, UPI and banking apps. ATMs and other self-service facilities are also expected to remain available, subject to normal operational conditions.
However, transactions and services that require a customer to physically visit a branch may be affected. These can include cash-related branch transactions, submission of documents, certain KYC-related requirements, account servicing requests, verification work and other requests that cannot be completed digitally. Customers may have to wait until branches reopen to complete such services.
State Bank of India (SBI) has already alerted customers about the proposed three-day strike. In its communication, the bank advised customers to complete important transactions before the strike period and use alternative channels such as ATMs, Automated Deposit cum Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs), customer service points, YONO, internet banking, mobile banking and UPI during the disruption.
Bank of Baroda has also asked customers to plan their branch-related requirements ahead of the September 28-30 strike. The lender said customers could make use of digital and self-service platforms, including bob World, internet banking, UPI-bob इ pay, bob World Business, WhatsApp Banking, ATMs and cash recycler machines for routine transactions.
Canara Bank has similarly informed customers about the proposed strike and said it would make efforts to maintain essential banking services during the period. The lender has advised customers to schedule their banking requirements in advance to minimise inconvenience.
For customers, the key distinction is between branch-dependent services and digital banking services. While routine payments, fund transfers, balance checks and several other transactions can generally be carried out through digital channels, services requiring physical verification or documentation may be delayed.
Customers planning a branch visit between September 28 and October 4 should therefore check the operating status of their specific branch before travelling. The RBI's state-wise bank holiday calendar can also be consulted to determine whether a particular date is a scheduled holiday in the customer's state.
With the strike and regional holidays falling within the same period, customers with urgent cash, documentation, KYC or other branch-dependent requirements may want to complete them before the disruption begins. UNI VK SS
